Busted!

Michael is out of town on business this week and despite my "best laid" plans to go to bed early or plow through a project or two I have once again aimlessly puttered my evenings away generally staying up even later than usual.

Last night after getting the kids to bed late and finishing up some computer chores, I wandered downstairs to catch the latest Lost on the DVR. I decided to whip up some hot chocolate and curl up for another episode with more questions than answers. It was late when I started and later when I finished. Once I shut everything off and got upstairs I randomly remembered that my empty mug was still on the family room floor. I easily determined that this could be dealt with in the morning and turned in for the night. After all, it was empty - nothing could spill.

Flash forward to this morning....

Sometime around 6:00 I had to contend with hostile feelings toward BoBo who had tipped the sitting room trash and begun some early morning looting. Nice. Then I realized the offspring were still slumbering so I curled right back up and settled in for some snoozing.

Time passed, along with a few odd and fitful morning dreams which were following by a sneaky little knock on my door. Eventually I gave and and said "Who is it?" In bounded Hayden awake and ready for the day. He jumped in, snuggled up and got started with the morning chatter that is classic for a well-rested AM Hayden.

We talked about his good sleep and lovely dreams. He asked about Daddy's work today, my sleep and our schedule for the day ahead. Then he asked my what did I eat after he went to sleep. Not thinking about my late-night beverage I said "Nothing" which led to my persistent and clever lad rephrasing to ask what I drank. Please remember that I was still waking up (unlike my interrogator) so I was not putting together the source behind his line of questioning. I decided to go with milk as my answer to avoid a discussion about making hot chocolate before we had even eaten anything nutritious.

Silly me! Hayden continued with his cross examination, and immediately wanted to know if I had chocolate milk. He was just not going to let this one go. Finally I wised up and asked him what he had done before knocking on my door.

"Mommy, I knew that it was awake time. I could see the light outside. I went downstairs to see you. I saw your mug with chocolate in it. So did you have chocolate milk while I was asleep?"

"Yes Hayden I did." I entered my guilty plea and then the defense rested. Perhaps next time I will go back downstairs to put my mug in the sink.
