Takin' A Hike!

On October 18th, there was a Mayor's Healthy Hometown Hike in our area. We decided it was the perfect opportunity for a family outing so we loaded up the Big Blue Grocery Getter and headed out to get our hike on.

Part of the lure was a hayride through the campground and forest. I have to say that this was one of the best hayrides I have experienced. We really wound our way up and through the forest so the views of fall foliage were incredible. At time things were a bit steep for my taste but all in all it was a stupendous 'nature cruise'. Here is a super fantastic family photo taken during our bumpy ride. Mental note - have fellow passengers snap a group pic when the tractor is not in motion next time!

After the scenic jaunt through the woods, we moseyed our way around the many booths that were set up for visitors. Bailey and I scored a pumpkin and there were free granola bars and water for all. Yipeee! Hayden and Michael made tracks to the crafty side of things and assembled a bird feeder for us to put out at home.
We took a short hike to the nature center which was loaded with critters and hands-on paraphernalia for the kidlets. Bailey was fascinated by all the wiggley friends she found and was even somewhat spellbound by the snakes. I wonder if they could tell she was hissing at them? At any rate it is clearly good for all that they were separated by the glass!
Inside the center the kids had a chance to pet little turtles that were swimming in a pond-like setting. They also got to pet a few of the big rabbits that live there. Outside the nature center we discovered a turtle box. It was a large wooden structure with a chicken wire framed lid. The turtles were able to set up shop in a fairly natural setting (minus the wooden confines that is) and we got to observe them hiding out amongst the falling leaves and twig piles. It was like a big game of turtle 'I Spy' which Hayden loved.
On the walk back, we gathered leaves and Hayden acquired a walking stick. We came across a cool concrete tunnel and the kids had a good old time scampering through and checking for echoes.
It was a fun-filled day and we hope to explore some more of the area parks this coming year!
